"Marea cu sarea", a Rumanian proverb (literally "to promise the sea with all its salt", that is, not to keep one's promise) is the name of the new CD by The Piccola Banda Ikona, the group led by Stefano Saletti.
"Marea cu sarea" is sung in Sabir, a lingua franca which sailors, pirates, fishermen, merchants, ship-owners availed of to communicate with each other in the ports of the Mediterranean: from Genoa to Tangiers, from Salonika to Istanbul, from Marseilles to Algiers, from Valencia to Palermo.
"We like this language. We like to mix sounds and words. We play Sabir. We sing Sabir" says the group.
Saletti and the Piccola Banda Ikona took this kind of sea-faring "Esperanto" developed it little by little availing of terms from Spanish, Italian, French and Arabic, and bring it back to life, writing ten intense tunes that span and encompass the sounds and the cultures of the Mediterranean, mixed with the atmospheres of the Southern Italian, Balkanic, Greek and Sephardic cultures.
"...writers, musicians, and singers with this much talent, sympathy and vision, it can be pure magic".
Ian Anderson - Folk Roots
"The expectations created by Saletti and his Piccola Banda Ikona, regardless of the CD's title, have undoubtedly been met…"
Daniele Bergesio - World Music Magazine
"A truly fascinating project which measures up to the best products the international scene has to offer".
Paolo De Bernardin - Rockstar
